Interior Evangelism

Imagine you want to take a survey of the counties nearest to where you live. You're looking to see what churches have works in which cities. Easy enough, right? You whip out your tablet and hunt around on Google Maps. Then you can do some checking for Facebook pages for churches in the cities and towns your researching. Easy peasy! You can even go to the old Yellow Pages website and hunt around. Add in a general web search and you're all set. Not so easy in Northeast Brazil! Many places are just not on the map. Big places, little towns with 200 - 300 houses full of people are not listed on most maps. Google Maps often won't take you properly from Point A to Point B. And once you head down a highway, it quickly goes from asphalt to dirt and rock with no signs telling you what's ahead and where that side road runs off to. If you stop to ask directions, you get a wide variety of answers about what's down the road....

Toca da Barriguda Cave

My husband and I live in the little interior town of Sobradinho - Bahia. To be quite honest there isn't a whole lot to speak of when it comes to tourism. There's the giant electric dam and its resulting great big reservoir which is supposedly the biggest in Latin America. There's a place way down a dirt road with some cave drawings on a few rocks where if there is a good rainy season you can enjoy a small waterfall. And there are lots of goats and sheep. Fazenda Campo Verde But not too far from us is the town of Campo Formoso which is full of caves and interesting rock formations. Many of the caves are poorly marked and hardly explored. Websites tell you that it's best to hire a guide. That's very true. You'll need one just to figure out where to turn off the road because of the lack of signs. Araras, Campo Formoso, Bahia

This September found us wandering a new path between our work in Lage dos Negros and our residence in Sobradinho (near the dam). We were interested to see what routes lie to the east of the two we usually travel. Byron made a GPS planning/tracking route and off we went. Araras is a lovely, good-sized town in the mountainous area of Campo Formoso County. The slightly higher elevation means more rain than the western part of the region and a few more hummingbirds and flowers. We found the views refreshing. There are also more mining projects with the possibilities of emeralds, quartz, and topaz for which Campo Formoso is famous. We came upon one such abandoned project with quite a few green quartzite rocks thrown about here and there. The dirt roads to Araras from Lage dos Negros were not so bad in general, but proceeding towards Curral Velho via Bom Jardim was quite another story.
