My husband and I live in the little interior town of Sobradinho - Bahia. To be quite honest there isn't a whole lot to speak of when it comes to tourism. There's the giant electric dam and its resulting great big reservoir which is supposedly the biggest in Latin America. There's a place way down a dirt road with some cave drawings on a few rocks where if there is a good rainy season you can enjoy a small waterfall. And there are lots of goats and sheep. Fazenda Campo Verde But not too far from us is the town of Campo Formoso which is full of caves and interesting rock formations. Many of the caves are poorly marked and hardly explored. Websites tell you that it's best to hire a guide. That's very true. You'll need one just to figure out where to turn off the road because of the lack of signs. I think there used to be nice signs, but the local guides took them down to help the industry - their industry. I could be enti...

São Gonçalo da Serra - Petroglyphs

This week we visited a place of which we had heard. It's located less than 20 miles from where we live. We came upon several places with these little red flowers on top of rocks. Beauty can be found anywhere if you look well. There is a sign on the highway indicating where to turn in for the community of São Gonçalo, but after you enter, there are numerous forks in the dirt road, and no more signs. Best advice: Just stop at a house that looks occupied, watch out for dogs, and ask for the cave drawings. We hiked through the entire mountain pass where a good sized stream must have run at some time in ancient history, and did not spot the petroglyphs. There happened to be a small number of people hunting for a local rodent called "mocó." They were having quite the "covid party" back in the woods cooking up their tasty prizes on a spit far from any supervision. I...

All Around Campo Formoso

Last Thursday, February 13, 2020 we headed down from Sobradinho to Lages in the yellow sandrail. There hadn't been any recent rains, so we went hopeful for a little less mud than our last trip. On the map our last trip from Lages dos Negros through Minas do Mimoso is marked on the map in blue. Our regular weekly route is in purple. This past week we took the purple route. The mostly dirt road still had quite a few large mud holes especially between Cacimbinha and Queixo D'antas. Most could be skirted around, but there were still a few as wide as the road with no way to avoid. That day we had three Bible studies and spent the night in the Pousada Centro in Lages. First tip of the day: Look for good places to stay along the way. A good night's sleep is hard to beat. A good bath makes it even better. I have to tell you about the lady near the bread store who offers breakfast in the mornings and snacks ...
